Recently The Darq (www.DarqArt.com) launched a true crime podcast, The Monster with 21 Faces (www.TheMonsterWith21Faces.com). As a companion piece to this series I, CinemaSlice.com Reel Review contributor Mark Kelly, will be providing a short write-up for every chapter. Each article will contain elements that I enjoyed about the episode along with some critiques and/or observations. With that being said, let’s begin.
The podcast begins with the abduction of prominent Japanese candy company president Katshuhisa Ezaki. We continue to explore the ins and outs of the investigation for the rest of the episode. Using actual sound footage of an event elevates a podcast’s quality and The Monster with 21 Faces is no exception. During an interview with Katshuhisa we hear sound bites from 1984 and their implementation is very well done. The use of ambient sounds are also a nice touch as they help transport us to the scene. The list of questions and observations at the end was a welcome addition. It was a great way to wrap up the episode while also introducing the next.
Some true crime podcasts tend to alter the timeline of events to heighten the listener’s experience. The facts are still the same, with exciting revelations saved for the end. The Monster with 21 Faces seems to not be taking this route. Katshuhisa Ezaki’s fate is essentially given to us halfway through the episode, with the details filled in later. This is merely an observation and it will be interesting to see if The Darq sticks to this formula throughout the entire series. One last thought, due to this story taking place in Japan the names are an obvious hurdle in the retelling. A fantastic job was done to repeat the names many times for the listener but I did find myself having to rewind for clarification. Overall, this was a great first episode. I’m invested in the story’s mystery and style and can’t wait to continue.
Side note, after kicking around at TheMonsterWith21Faces.com we found a ton of great content– included “Episode 1 Archive videos – https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1osMCWCPgBa1957mNsCTr7-JGSdJ4l2Sl
